Papaya
Carica papaya
Taiwan Red Lady (786) is our chosen papaya variety — a hybrid known for early fruiting (6-9 months), uniform oval fruits of 1-2 kg, and resistance to papaya ring spot virus.
Papaya provides quick returns (first harvest in 9 months), requires moderate water, and has consistent local market demand. It works well as an intercrop alongside slower-maturing turmeric.
Growing Process
Nursery: Seeds sown in pro-trays, germinate in 12-15 days
Transplanting: At 45-day old seedlings, 2m × 2m spacing
Irrigation: Drip irrigation critical — papaya hates waterlogging
Support: Staking required in first 3 months in wind-prone areas
