Installing Drip Irrigation: Day-by-Day Account
After weeks of planning, we finally began laying the drip irrigation system across our 2-acre turmeric plot. This was our biggest single infrastructure investment to date — and we want to document every detail.
What We Installed
- Main pipeline: 63mm HDPE pipe — 120 meters
- Sub-main: 40mm HDPE — 80 meters
- Lateral drip lines: 16mm with inline drippers at 30cm spacing — 2400 meters
- Drip rate: 2 liters/hour per dripper
- Filter: 120-mesh screen filter with pressure gauge
Day 1: Main Line Trenching
We dug a 30cm deep trench along the main pipeline route. Labour cost: ₹2,800 for 4 workers, one day. The ground was still soft from recent rain — timing was perfect.
The 63mm HDPE main pipe connects our borewell motor directly to the filter unit at the top of the field.
Day 2: Sub-main and Filter Setup
The filter unit assembly took half a day with the manufacturer's technician. We paid ₹500 for his guidance — worth every rupee. He showed us the correct venturi injector setup for fertigation.
Day 3-4: Lateral Line Laying
This was the most time-consuming part. Each lateral line runs the length of each raised bed — about 40 meters. We have 60 beds in total.
Challenge: The beds weren't perfectly straight (our land leveling is imperfect), so some laterals needed slack loops to accommodate curves. We'll fix this in next season.
Day 5: Pressure Testing and Leakage Check
Ran the system at full pressure (1.5 kg/cm²) and walked every line. Found 3 leaks at connector joints — all fixed with thread tape. This is normal and expected.

Wait — we said ₹38,500 in the header. The difference is ₹6,000 we recovered by returning unused pipe from the original overestimate. Final net cost: ₹38,500.
What I'd Do Differently
- Plan lateral lengths more precisely before ordering. We overestimated by 15%.
- Mark bed positions before ordering so pipe lengths are exact.
- Rent a pipe-laying tool — manual laying across 60 beds is exhausting.
Current Status
System is operational. We're running test irrigations daily to calibrate timing and check uniformity.
